Australia’s New Menopause Health Assessment Items: A Milestone for Integrated Care

Good news: Medicare is about to cover dedicated menopause check-ups

From 1 July 2025, Australian women can book a Medicare-rebated menopause or perimenopause health assessment with their GP. Two new MBS items (695 for GPs and 19000 for other approved doctors) pay for a 20-minute, whole-person consult that looks at everything from hot flushes to bone health.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE ASSESSMENT?

Your GP (often with a practice nurse) will:

  1. Listen to your story – symptoms, cycle changes, mood, sleep, sexual health, medical history.
  2. Check the basics – blood pressure, height, weight, maybe blood tests.
  3. Screen smartly – think cervical screen, mammogram reminders, or a bone-density scan if needed.
  4. Create a plan together – lifestyle tweaks, hormone therapy chat, non-hormonal options, mental-health supports—whatever fits you.
  5. Give practical tips – exercise, nutrition, alcohol, smoking, stress, sleep.

It’s a chance to cover the whole you, not just pick off single symptoms.

WHO CAN BOOK?

  • Women in perimenopause or menopause
  • Those with premature ovarian insufficiency or early menopause.
  • No age cut-off if symptoms or risk factors are present.

If they bulk-bill, there’s no out-of-pocket cost; otherwise, you just pay the gap like any other consult.

HOW TO GET STARTED…

  1. Call your GP clinic and ask if they offer the new “menopause health assessment” from 1 July.
  2. Book a long appointment (20 minutes or more).
  3. Bring notes on symptoms, previous tests, medications, and any questions.
  4. Tell a friend – the more voices, the stronger the push to keep this item on the schedule beyond its trial period.

For years menopause was whispered about or brushed aside. Embedding integrated menopause care in Medicare sends a clear message:

Your mid-life health is essential, complex, and worthy of time and expertise.

Let’s use this new benefit, share our experiences, and keep the momentum rolling toward truly comprehensive menopause support for every woman in Australia.
